If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the right position, try closing and then opening the door to determine if it closes and latches correctly. If it doesn't, you'll need to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or even forward or back, until the door closes and latches correctly.
If the door still moves or jiggles, you might need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch, or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Remove the Latch
The latch is an angled metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward, allowing you to open the door.
